Biography

Ezra, was born in Baghdad (Iraq), son of Eliahou Abed… After finishing his primary first school, he went in 1913 to Istanbul (the capital of the Ottoman empire) to continue his studies. After a while he preferred to voyage in Europe, and explore the world. Traveling westwards, from one country to the other, thru Greece, the Balkans states, Yugoslavia, Italy, and France, where he arrived just at the time of World War 1. Being an ottoman, he was taken as a prisoner of war, but quickly released. He stayed in France some years, and changed his family name from Abed, to “PATAN”. Finally, in 1921, he decided to go back to the Middle East. Sailing from Marseilles, and during a stop in Oran, an Algerian port, Ezra visited the town and was photographed in a studio… I have yet the authentic picture, stamped by the photographer studio’s name, in Oran. It’s the first valuable document of my father. On the back of the picture, he wrote in Arabic: Ezra Eliahou, in Oran, one region of west Algiers (Magreb) depending to France, (10 June 1921). See the picture below, and note how he is dressed like a Frenchman of that period, and the typical French “moustache Gauloise”. Disembarking in Alexandria, he went to Cairo, where the Iraqian Jew community was quite numerous and strong… and begins to work in the textile trade. Being a traveler salesman, he met the Sasson family, and their daughter Victoria. They marry in 1927, lived in Cairo, and managed a ladies dressmaking studio. He learned cutting ladies dress ware, and she, with the help of a small staff, sew and finish the garments. It seems to go on well, but suddenly, on December 1938, aged 42 , he died from a cerebral hemorrhage. ( ELIE PATAN ).
